Method Statement for Earthing System Installation

The electrical earthing method statement is an assessment of risk following the identification of hazards connected with the work task of electrical earthing and the subsequent implementation of controls to manage the risks.

  • SWMS safe work method statement requires hazard control measures to be implemented per electrical safety procedures when undertaking the earthing of electrical equipment.

Electrical Earthing Procedure

Workplace Safety has conducted a comprehensive job hazard analysis for electrical works, namely the methods used to achieve earthing of an installation and per electrical safe work practices have developed risk controls per the hierarchy of controls.

  • Assess and review health & safety practices in the workplace

  • Workplace consultation for the identification of hazards with the earthing and bonding of electrical equipment

  • Risk assessment to identify health and safety hazards in the workplace having the potential to cause death and serious injury

  • Health and safety planning when bonding and earthing electrical equipment, e.g. minimise risks through the planning process

  • WHS consultation and participation processes ensure adequate health and safety communication

  • Workplace environmental hazards, e.g. trenches and excavations

  • Tripping hazards in workplace resulting in injuries caused by slips trips and falls

  • Implementing control measures for the system of earthing, e.g. isolation of hazards and services

  • Safety information for employees to control risks

  • Electrical testing equipment used in the earthing and grounding of electrical equipment

  • Insulated tools used in the electrical earthing of an electrical system, e.g. electricians testing tools

  • Contact with energised electrical equipment resulting in electrocution, electric shock and electrical injuries

  • Electrical spotter to warn persons working in the vicinity of energised electrical equipment, e.g. electrical hazards

  • Earthing of electrical equipment requiring the implementation of control measures, e.g. isolation of hazards and services

  • Electrical grounding of an electrical system per safety procedures for working on electrical equipment

  • Grounding of electrical equipment incomplete requiring the implementation of electrical hazard control measures

  • Hazardous chemicals used in the grounding of electrical equipment

  • Hazardous manual tasks in connection with how to ground electrical equipment

  • Personal protective equipment, e.g. electrical PPE and electrical safety gear

  • Health and safety training for workers, e.g. electrical safe work practices training

  • Workplace housekeeping incorporating material handling and storage safety

  • Legislative and regulatory requirements for compliance with WHS legislation, e.g. codes of practice and workplace standards

  • Monitor and review of risk controls, e.g. implement and monitor work health and safety practices

  • Electrician tasks and activities in connection with electrical equipment earthing

SWMS Electrical

Earthing Procedure

Safe work procedure for electrical equipment earthing shall assess the risk of construction high risk activities involved in electrical grounding.

High risk activities that may expose workers to hazards and risks are likely to include but not be limited to:

  • Working on or near live electrical equipment, e.g. electrical hazard

  • Implementing an isolation procedure for electrical equipment to ensure electrical equipment safety

  • Lockout electrical equipment

  • Testing electrical equipment per safe work procedure for electrical work

  • Use of electrical testing tools

  • Other electrical earthing hazards
