Fire Equipment Servicing SWMS

Workplace Safety has conducted a comprehensive hazard analysis for fire equipment maintenance, e.g. maintenance of fire extinguishers and inspection of fire safety equipment with risk control measures developed for identified hazards per WHS hierarchy of controls.

  • Assess and review safety practices in the workplace to control risk

  • WHS consultation with employees on health and safety matters to identify potential hazards with undertaking the maintenance of fire protection equipment

  • Risk assessment to identify hazard and risk in the workplace that could result in death or serious injury

  • Health and safety planning for the servicing of fire equipment, e.g. minimise risks through the planning process

  • WHS consultation and participation processes ensure adequate health and safety communication

  • Workplace environmental hazards, e.g. confined space and working at heights

  • Slip trips and falls in the workplace having the potential to cause death or serious injury

  • Implementation of controls for the maintenance of fire protection systems and equipment, e.g. isolation of hazards and services

  • Health and safety plan for maintenance of fire safety equipment that identifies fire extinguisher hazards and provides safety guidelines for fire equipment technicians, e.g. how to service fire extinguishers

  • Fire extinguisher visual inspection per testing of fire extinguisher requirements to ensure safety with fire extinguisher and compliance with WHS legislative requirements, e.g. fire extinguisher requirements, fire extinguishers classification, fire extinguisher pin

  • Inspection of fire extinguisher per fire extinguisher inspection standards at the required fire extinguisher inspection frequency, e.g. fire extinguisher yearly inspection requirements, pressure testing of fire extinguishers

  • Fire extinguisher refill per fire extinguishers service requirements and fire extinguisher safety data sheet to ensure fire extinguisher safety

  • Fire blanket inspection per fire blanket inspection requirements and fire blanket inspection frequency with a fire blanket inspection tag fitted to the fire blanket

  • Test and tag fire extinguishers with appropriate fire extinguisher tags following the testing of fire extinguishers

  • Record the results of fire extinguishers testing and inspection of fire fighting equipment in the fire equipment register

  • Hazardous chemicals and hazardous products used in connection with a fire extinguisher refill

  • Hazardous manual tasks in connection with the servicing of fire equipment

  • Personal protective equipment, e.g. respiratory protective equipment,  protective clothing, gloves for chemical handling

  • Health and safety training for workers, e.g. fire extinguisher inspection training per fire extinguisher training legislation

  • Workplace housekeeping per housekeeping policy and procedures

  • Legislative and regulatory requirements for compliance with WHS legislation, e.g. servicing of fire extinguishers legislation, fire extinguisher regulations and fire extinguisher inspection standards

  • Monitoring controls, e.g. assessment and review the effectiveness of control measures

  • Fire equipment technician tasks and activities in connection with servicing of fire equipment

Fire Equipment Maintenance

Servicing of fire equipment SWMS shall assess the risk of construction high-risk activities for servicing of fire equipment.

High-risk work activities that may expose workers to WHS hazards are likely to include but not be limited to:

  • Plant and equipment used in the work task

  • Safe handling of chemicals in the workplace

  • Use of hand and power tools

  • Other fire equipment servicing hazards
